Pre-Purchase Exams
Prior to the investment of purchasing a new horse, a complete pre-purchase examination is highly recommended.
The format can be tailored to the individual needs of the client. This includes but is not limited to a thorough physical examination from head to tail and a performance evaluation in hand, under saddle or on a lunge line. Lameness Services and Farrier Consultations
Lameness exams can be performed at the farm, event, or at our clinic. The exam consists of an in-depth evaluation of the horse, focusing on performance, history and rider/trainer feedback. The horse is observed in hand, on the lunge, and often under saddle. If lameness is evident, the source of lameness can be localized via diagnostic analgesia (nerve blocks). Imaging modalities are further utilized to help determine lameness and performance causes.

Farrier Consultations
We believe it is important to work closley with your farrier. The doctors at Equine Wellness and Performance routinely communicate with the farrier involved in the case. Our doctors discuss with the farrier the exam and diagnostic results. We also encourage farriers with interesting or difficult cases to arrange to have the horse’s feet trimmed or shod at the clinic. At that time, radiographs can be taken to provide important information regarding foot balance. This then affords the opportunity for the farrier to consult with one or more of the doctors on staff about shoeing methods and recommendations for that particular horse.

Acupuncture
The therapeutic effects of equine acupuncture date back to 2000-3000 BC in China.
These traditional Chinese techniques involve inserting thin needles, at various depths, to stimulate specific points throughout the patient’s body. These acupuncture points are areas of increased electrical sensitivity.
Acupuncture can increase circulation, assist in the relief of muscle spasms, improve immunity, and provide numerous other benefits.
Traditional Chinese Medicine also involves the use of numerous herbal formulations, many of which can be used in conjunction with Western medicines.
